However, his father, being a strict disciplinarian, wanted him to pursue a more stable career in engineering.
Despite his father's resistance, Mithun Chakraborty took the leap of faith and moved to Pune to join the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). It was during his time at FTII that he adopted the stage name "Mithun" after the legendary Hindu deity Lord Krishna's friend and companion. Upon completing his training at FTII, Mithun Da made his debut in the 1976 film "Mrigayaa," directed by Mrinal Sen. The film garnered critical acclaim, and Mithun's striking portrayal of a tribal man earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor.

In 2014, Mithun Chakraborty joined politics by becoming a member of the All India Trinamool Congress party (TMC). However, due to health issues, he resigned from his political position in 2016.
